Raised in Colorado with a deep love for animals, Dr. Schmalz’s journey into veterinary medicine began with her family’s horses and dogs, which instilled in her a strong work ethic and respect for the wisdom of animals. After completing her undergraduate studies in biology at Bowling Green State University, she earned her DVM from Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1992. Initially focused on farm animal medicine, Dr. Schmalz transitioned to small animal care in 2007, where she discovered her calling for providing peaceful and compassionate end-of-life care. Dr. Schmalz’s passion for in-home euthanasia was ignited during her first experience performing the service in 2007. She vividly remembers the tender moment of helping a beloved dog pass peacefully in his own yard, surrounded by love. This experience opened her eyes to how euthanasia could be a beautiful and respectful transition, and since then, she has dedicated herself to ensuring that pets and their families receive the best possible care during this emotional time. When she’s not caring for her patients, Dr. Schmalz enjoys hiking, fishing, and exploring thrift and vintage shops. She shares her home with a wonderful crew of pets, including Bhim, a Corgi/Heeler mix; Mabel, a Catahoula mix; and Jane and Nellie, two Morkies. With half of her furry family being geriatric, Dr. Schmalz knows firsthand the importance of special care and love during the later stages of life.
