Dr. Rachael Bernard

Portland, OR

Dr. Rachael Bernard earned her undergraduate degree from Whitman College in 2011 and her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Texas A&M University in 2023. She began her veterinary career in emergency medicine, where she supported many families through unexpected and difficult moments with their pets. Over time, she transitioned into general practice and in-home euthanasia, developing special interests in pain management, soft-tissue surgery, and hospice and palliative care. Her clinical background allows her to approach end-of-life care with both medical precision and deep empathy. Through her work in emergency settings, Dr. Bernard saw firsthand how meaningful a calm and loving goodbye can be for both pets and their families. She is especially passionate about in-home euthanasia because it allows for a more peaceful, personal experience in a familiar environment. She considers it an honor to guide families through one of the hardest parts of pet ownership and is dedicated to ensuring each patient feels safe, comfortable, and cared for in their final moments. Outside of veterinary medicine, Dr. Bernard enjoys exploring new restaurants, spending time outdoors hiking and paddleboarding, and relaxing with a good book. She shares her home with her beloved companions, Spud, a beagle/golden retriever mix, and Stella, a tortoiseshell cat — both of whom happily keep her on call and remind her daily why this work matters.
