Dr. Amanda Buerk has never known life without animals: a Newfoundland named Nantucket was waiting on the day Dr. Buerk came home as a newborn. Growing up beside that loyal protector turned a natural affinity into a calling to care for the bond between people and their pets.

I honestly cannot recall a time when I didn't have a connection or a bond with animals. It started literally the day I was brought home as a newborn. My childhood Newfoundland, Nantucket, was there waiting for me, and from that moment on she was my constant companion and my loyal protector.

Growing up alongside her taught me the depth of the bond that we share with our animals. They aren't just pets; they're our family. As I grew, that natural affinity evolved into a calling, and I realized that while they spend their lives looking out for us, they need someone to look out for them as well.

And that's why I started my journey in the veterinary field, and why it has been an absolute honor to care for that incredible bond that we share.

Years in general practice taught Dr. Amanda Buerk that helping families say goodbye was the most meaningful part of the work, and that a busy, sterile clinic was the wrong place for it. This is her story of moving her practice into the home, so a pet's final moments can be quiet, familiar and surrounded by family.

During my years as a general practitioner, I was lucky enough to share in the joy of new puppies and kittens. But it was when I was helping families say goodbye to their beloved pets that it truly resonated most deeply within my heart.

In those difficult moments, I wanted to provide those pets and families with the most compassionate care possible, but I felt in my soul that a cold and sterile clinic setting was not the right place for it. Clinics are busy, loud and not the warmest of environments.

That realization completely shaped how I practice today. It's why I transitioned my practice into the home, so that a pet's final moments can be filled with familiar smells and quiet comfort, surrounded by the people who love them the most.

Seven years of in-home euthanasia have given Dr. Amanda Buerk many moments to remember. In this one, a family Dr. Buerk helped say goodbye to their beagle stops Dr. Buerk in an antique shop to say thank you and to introduce their new puppy.

I have been providing in-home euthanasia care for families for the past seven years, and I've met many amazing animals and wonderful families over those years. It has been my absolute honor to assist every single one of them.

A moment that still touches me to this day happened a few months after I helped a family say goodbye to their sweet beagle. I ran into them, not in a clinical setting, but at a local antique shop. They called out my name from across the store, came over and told me how deeply grateful they were for the care I had provided for their girl and for them. They told me they could not have imagined a more dignified and peaceful send-off. Then they introduced me to their new beagle puppy, who they happened to have with them.

The sales clerk who was helping me at the counter looked at me and said, "I don't know what you did for that family, but it must have been something very heartfelt and special."

Those are the moments that make this aspect of veterinary medicine so incredibly important. It reminded me that the peace we provide in the home stays with these families as they heal, and as they open their hearts to love again.
