Our family recently lost a beloved member, our Chocolate Lab, Cinnamon. She was such a delight. Always happy to be involved – go for that walk by the river or up in the mountains; go for a ride in the car with her head out the window; greet people who came to visit with gusto; guard the family from strangers approaching our door. She would wag her tail and jump up and down until you’d think it would hurt. Until that day when she lost her zeal. She could no longer greet us each morning with a kiss and a wag; could not jump up on the couch or into the car looking forward to that ride or walk in the wilderness. She stopped chasing the squirrels and birds out back. It hurt her to stand up, and her breathing became labored. We could see she was suffering but she held on to life for us. Selfishly, we wanted her to stay with us forever, but we could not do that to her. So, we did some research and found a service for in-home Euthanasia for pets. We contacted Dr. Lori Thomas through CodaPet to help us allow Cinnamon to leave this world the best way we could, at home and surrounded by her loved ones. From the moment Dr. Thomas arrived at our home, she put our family at ease. She asked us to tell stories about Cinnamon, to share experiences and to show her pictures. She checked over our Cinnamon and agreed she was at the end of her life and was in pain. She explained to us what would happen next and allowed us to ask questions that she patiently answered and gave us the time we all needed to say goodbye. Then Dr. Thomas slowly and with care and empathy administered the medicines to our precious Cinnamon. We held her as she left us. The doctor then took her away to the Crematorium. Before they left, Dr. Thomas created a footprint with Cinnamon’s name blocked in clay. Dr. Thomas helped us through a very traumatic day with compassion and genuine sympathy. She made an unbelievably sad day bearable! Thank you, Dr. Thomas.
